Websites
See the ‘Clean Energy Future’ website for information about government programs and resources.
The Greener Living website is produced by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. It provides information on energy, water, waste and travel including rebates & assistance, guides and how to take action.
The VEET scheme is a Victorian Government initiative promoted as the Energy Saver Incentive.
The VEET scheme is designed to make energy efficiency improvements more affordable, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, and encourage investment, employment and innovation in industries that supply energy efficiency goods and services.
Under the scheme, accredited businesses can offer discounts and special offers on selected energy saving products and appliances installed at homes, businesses or other non-residential premises. The bigger the greenhouse gas reduction, the bigger the potential saving.
The Department of planning and community development has developed new guidance sheets to improve energy efficiency for heritage homes.
If you are looking at retrofitting your home you may find these useful.

• CityCwitch – for office tenants: support to develop a ‘green office plan’ and implement it, as well as rebates for NABERS assessments (National Australian Built Environmental Ratings Scheme).CitySwitch Green Office is a program to support commercial office tenants reduce their office energy use and bottom line. City of Greater Geelong has recently signed up to it. See: http://www.cityswitch.net.au
• Sustainable Melbourne Fund - provides loans for retrofit / upgrade of commercial buildings in order to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.
Sustainable Melbourne Fund (SMF)
How to get funding
SMF provides loans from $50,000 up to a maximum of $500,000 per project with loan terms of up to 6 years (loans for less than $50,000 will also be considered).
SMF will consider projects that enhance the environment and deliver economic benefits. This includes innovative business ventures or new technologies that provide environmental benefits to the wider community.
An application for funding must be made to SMF, accompanied by the details of the project, clearly outlining the proposed works, savings generated by the project (energy, water, greenhouse gas emissions, plus dollars) and the quote for the proposed works.
Loans that won’t cost the earth
SMF provides competitive loan rates that are reviewed each year. Unlike traditional loans, all financial returns are re-invested in future sustainability projects, allowing SMF to support the community in further environmental initiatives.
The application process
The application process comprises of three stages before funds can be released in stage four to successful applicants:
Stage 1 Preliminary review and credit assessment
Stage 2 Sustainable Melbourne Fund Investment Subcommittee approval
Stage 3 Final approval by Sustainable Melbourne Fund Board of Trustees
Stage 4 Letter of offer, execution of agreement and distribution of funds
